LA MARQUE, Texas (KTRK) -- The state is telling the City of La Marque not so fast on its proposal to temporarily raise property taxes.
This comes as the city has said it needs the money, or it will run out.
La Marque is one of four cities in Texas that received a letter from Attorney General Ken Paxton demanding a stop to what he's calling a potentially illegal property tax increase.
The AG's office claims La Marque did not comply with state auditing requirements , saying the city filed required paperwork in September when it was due in March.
The letter states that because of this, they are launching an investigation to determine if their new property tax rate is legal and demanding that the new tax rate not be implemented until the investigation is finished.
