The Central Health Ministry said in a health advisory issued on Friday that cough syrup (cough and cold medicines) should not be given to children under two years of age.
This advisory was issued after the deaths of children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Cough syrup should not be given to children
The DGHS under the Health Ministry said in the advisory that generally cough syrup should not be given to children under five years of age. If cough syrup needs to be given to older children, it should be used with caution.
This means that the child being given the medicine should be kept under strict supervision, given proper dosage.
Medicine should be given for the minimum duration. Cough syrup should not be given along with multiple medications.
