MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( WBRC ) - A new state audit released Friday found the Greene County Sheriff’s Office owes the state almost $5 million for “inadequate documentation” of payments made to employees, attorneys, and vendors, mostly with money from the county’s bingo fund.
Auditors found “inadequate or no supporting documentation to support” $3,159,031 paid from the Bingo Fund to employees beyond their usual salaries.
The audit also found the same issue with $2,161,552 paid to vendors, of which $1,179,252 was paid to consultants and attorneys for professional services. The remaining amount included payments to merchants, individuals, restaurants, hotels, automotive repair shops, gas stations and grocery stores.
