With about three months to go before the end of the year, Niagara has already set a grim record.

Niagara Regional Police Chief Bill Fordy said 33 people have died in motor vehicle collisions so far this year on roads patrolled by the NRP, including pedestrians struck by vehicles.

It’s the most ever reported in the region, and unless things change, he said it’s only going to get worse.

“We are seeing more fatalities — 33 is the highest number we have ever had,” Fordy said.

The previous record was set in 2009, when 27 people were killed in collisions in the region.

The numbers have been slowly increasing in recent years, with 24 deaths on roads patrolled by the NRP in 2024, 19 lives lost in 2023, 19 in 2022, 21 in 2021 and 19 in 2020.
