LOGAN — With the average U.S. student loan balance topping $39,000 per borrower, Utah continues to stand out as the state with the least student debt burden, according to a new WalletHub report released recently.
Utah ranked 50th overall in the 2025 study, with the nation’s lowest average student debt and smallest share of residents carrying loans. Only Mississippi fared worse nationally, while Utah’s debt levels were the lightest in the country.
WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia using 12 measures, from the size of monthly payments to unemployment rates among borrowers ages 25 to 34.
