LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The criminal case against the man accused of killing a Las Vegas police officer three years ago will move forward after a judge ruled him competent to stand trial Friday.

Officer Truong Thai, a 23-year Metro police veteran, was responding to a domestic disturbance involving Tyson Hampton, 27, on Oct. 13, 2022, when Hampton allegedly shot him near Flamingo Road and University Center Drive, police said.

Hampton’s criminal case has faced delays amid several rounds of competency hearings. The right to a fair trial -- and the right to become competent to stand trial -- is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution as interpreted by courts. Essentially, a defendant must understand the charges against them and be able to assist their attorney.
