New York officials are celebrating the Trump administration's decision to drop $187 million in planned funding cuts to police and other agencies across the state that get homeland security grants.
Gov. Kathy Hochul had blasted the cuts on Sept. 30, saying New York City's police and fire departments were set to lose $115 million and all 57 counties outside the city would see 90% reductions in their grants. Westchester County was going to lose $1.2 million in annual funding that officials said is used for such purposes as firefighters' protective gear and active-shooter drills for emergency responders.
That threat subsided on Friday, Oct. 3, as Hochul and other elected officials announced the administration had canceled the cuts.
