Jamal Shead invited his teammates to Austin, Texas, over the summer for a few days of workouts and bonding, the kind of summer group outing the team is perfecting in the Darko Rajakovic era.

Even though the Raptors have gathered in more glamorous locales — including Spain for two straight summers — Shead knew how to make the visit special.

“We ate some good food,” he said.

What kind? “Straight Texas barbecue, man. Straight BBQ.”

Part of the reason for these summer camps is for the players to see each other away from the grind of the NBA season — game, practice, bus, flight, rinse, lather, repeat — and get a glimpse of them as people rather than just teammates.
