THOMAS COUNTY, Ga. (WCTV) - As the drought in South Georgia and the Big Bend continues, fire departments are seeing an increase in fires across the region.

Thomas County Fire Chief Chris Jones said they have responded to anywhere from two to four fires a day and sometimes they’re going back to the same location.

More news out of South Georgia:

“It’s individuals who have had a yard debris pile that maybe they’ve burned in the same area for many years with no issues whatsoever and were responding to a call for those individuals, their fire has maybe moved over to their neighbor’s property,” the fire chief said.

There was also a grass fire in Jefferson County on I-10 and although it was a small fire, fires like these are rapidly intensifying because of the dry and hot weather. The latest
