ROCKFORD, IL — A 38-year-old Rockford man was killed Oct. 2 when an 800-pound stone slab crushed him during an apparent workplace accident at C&I Stone Design, 2602 17th St.
Horacio Prada Dominguez was killed when he and another employee attempted to move a large piece of quartz stone about 12:40 p.m., according to information from the Winnebago County Coroner's Office.
The stone began to fall toward Dominguez and despite efforts to brace it, the stone fell on him, pinning him to another slab of stone. Dominguez was unable to free himself and the Rockford Fire Department was called, a news release said.
Firefighters were able to remove the slab but Dominguez was determined to be beyond resuscitation. He was pronounced dead at 1:25 p.m.
An autopsy determined the cause of death was a cru
