GALES FERRY, CT (WFSB) - Artificial Intelligence is revolutionizing the way apple orchards keep up with their crop.

Holmberg Orchards is nestled in the hills of Gales Ferry overlooking the Thames River Valley.

“Holmberg Orchards is a 4th generation apple orchard. So I’m the 4thgeneration to grow fruit on this spot," said Russell Holmberg, owner.

October marked peak apple season on the farm where workers have picked about 25,000 bushels.

“We grow about 60 acres of fruit, most of that is apples,” Holmberg said.

The orchard has 38 varieties ranging from the classic Macintosh to newer types, such as firecrackers.

“We are constantly educating ourselves, going to trade shows, talking to experts,” added Holmberg.

One of their biggest recent advancements is an apple sorter.
