Outgoing City of Joondalup mayor Albert Jacob says fast-tracking underground power in the city is a “fight worth having” amid news residents could be waiting more than a decade to see overhead powerlines sunk.

His comments came as the council voted in favour of asking the CEO prepare a report on how underground power could be progressed in older southern suburbs such as Duncraig, Marmion and Padbury, where homes are still serviced by overhead lines.

According to city officers, Western Power recently confirmed with them it was unlikely the city would be considered for inclusion in its underground power programs for another 10 to 15 years.
