CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) - Breast cancer affects one in eight women across the United States. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity to highlight the importance of early detection and annual mammograms.

Lena McIlwain is a two-time breast cancer survivor who says her positivity got her through her breast cancer journey.

"It's a fight, it's a battle, it takes a strong person to overcome the challenge," said McIlwain. "This is something I'm going to have to deal with the rest of my life."

McIlwain was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021, and then it came back in 2025. After her second time, she had to undergo a double mastectomy and chemotherapy.
