BAR HARBOR -- A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held earlier today for a permanent helipad in Bar Harbor.

The helipad, located at 349 Main Street, will be used to enhance Lifeflight of Maine's life-saving work by allowing helicopters to land closer to Mount Desert Island Hospital, reducing the transport time for critically ill or injured patients.

Previously, Lifeflight would land on a baseball field or the Bar Harbor ferry terminal, weather depending.

The project has been in development for years, and construction officially commenced early this summer.

The President and CEO of MDI Hospital says the new helipad is a vital resource for the island community that ensures patients will be transported quickly and safely when every second counts.
