A man identified as 58-year-old Victor Conrad Altamirano died Oct. 2 after being shot by Phoenix police officers .

At about 8 p.m., officers went to a home near 7th Street and Sunland Avenue about an attempted suicide, according to Phoenix Police Sgt. Rob Scherer.

The caller said that a man, identified as Victor Conrad Altamirano, was inside the home making suicidal statements while holding a knife, Scherer said.

Officers arrived and spoke with the caller and the individuals who were inside the home, and they confirmed Altamirano possessed a knife, Sherer confirmed.

During this conversation, Altamirano came out of the home and ran toward an officer in the street in front of the home, "verbally challenging" the officer while holding a knife above his head, Scherer said.
