ELY, Minn. (Northern News Now) - A life was saved Friday afternoon near Ely when some people saw a violent car crash and jumped into action.
According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, it happened around 3 p.m. Friday on the Echo Trail just north of Ely.
Bystanders reported seeing a car run off the road and into the ditch, strike some ledge rock, go airborne and roll over.
The vehicle then went up in flames.
Authorities say quick-thinking bystanders jumped into action and pulled the driver from the car before the vehicle became engulfed.
The driver, who was the only person in the car, was airlifted to a Duluth hospital for treatment of a head injury.
Their condition is unknown.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The victim’s name has not been released.
