FREEBORN COUNTY, Minn. — Omar Jamal, a well-known Somali community advocate and liaison for the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, spoke out Friday for the first time since his release from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody, aiming to challenge what he called “wrong narratives” about how detainees are treated at the southern Minnesota facility where he was held for about a month.
Jamal, who has long served as a liaison between authorities and Minnesota’s Somali community, was released from Freeborn County facilities that also house ICE detainees after what his attorney described as a “mutually agreed-upon settlement, resulting in a court order directing his release.”
