PORTLAND, Maine — The University of Southern Maine unveiled the new $63 million Crewe Center for the Arts on Friday, marking the completion of a project that has been 30 years in the making.

The 43,000-square-foot facility includes 40 practice rooms, a 200-seat performance hall, and 26 new Steinway pianos, making USM the first “All-Steinway Institution” in Maine. Alumni and university leaders called the opening a major milestone for the school.

“They are central to how we learn, how we connect, and how we understand the world, and they are central to how we shape our future,” said USM President Jacqueline Edmondson.

Actor Tony Shalhoub, a 1977 USM graduate, added, “To come back to this campus and see this center. This unbelievable center, it’s incredibly moving.”
