SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Law school graduates will soon have a second option for their attorney licensure in Utah.

Currently in Utah, any qualified individuals seeking their attorney licensure has to take the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE), which requires exam-takers to write several essay responses. complete two performance-related tasks and answer 200 multiple-choice questions.

While the Uniform Bar Exam is set to be replaced by the NextGen Bar Exam in Utah in July 2028, the Utah Supreme Court has also recently approved a new, alternate pathway to Attorney licensure.

The alternate pathway is a skills-based, practice-ready route that allows individuals to achieve licensure through hands-on experience, rather than the UBE.
