HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Thanksgiving tradition has been canceled for this year.

Kailua High School said the school is unable to hold its annual Imu Turkey fundraiser because the canopy that was donated 20 years ago needs to be repaired.

For over two decades, families have dropped off turkeys, hams, and roasts to be cooked underground.

The Hawaii Department of Education said they are working to bring the structure up to code so it won’t pose a fire risk to neighboring properties.
