NEW ORLEANS — The cost of living is one of the . Before Mayor Cantrell's social justice organizations said residents want to see more investment from the budget.
"People want to see increased investment in housing, in infrastructure, in services for young people, and in health, and that's not what we're seeing in this budget," Nellie Catzen with Big Easy Budget Coalition said.
But instead of investment in housing, residents could see an increase in property taxes. Mayor Cantrell's 2026 proposed budget includes a property tax "roll forward" of millage rates. Millages were rolled back two years ago after a city-wide tax reassessment steeply rose property valuations.
