As supermarkets start to stock up with Wednesday Addams costumes, there’s no escaping the fact that Halloween is around the corner. Soon, windowsills and doorsteps will be dotted with orange heads, the glow of tealights streaming through their triangular eyes.

Of course, it is during trick or treating hours when the pumpkin really comes into its own. However, as anyone who has been warmed by a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks or a steaming bowl of pumpkin soup will know: this squash is more than a canvas for a spooky face.
