Demolition Drive Targets Illegal Structures in Bareilly
In Bareilly, a significant demolition drive was conducted by the district administration on Saturday, targeting illegal constructions in various areas, including a banquet hall owned by Dr Nafees Ahmed, who is among those arrested following recent violence. The demolition of Raza Palace in the Jakhira area took place under heavy police presence, nearly nine days after clashes erupted over the ‘I Love Muhammad’ controversy.
Dr Nafees, aged 65, and his son Farhan, aged 32, were arrested on allegations of inciting the crowd during the violence. Officials stated that the demolition was part of a routine operation against illegal buildings, not directly linked to the recent unrest. BDA Vice-Chairman Dr Manikandan clarified, "The baarat ghar belonged to Dr Nafees. A notice was issued to him in 2024 that the structure was illegal. A demolition order was issued on May 17, 2025. As per directions of the Supreme Court and High Court, we gave him 30 days to file an appeal. Now, there is no appeal pending."
The drive also included sealing a house in Faiq Enclave owned by Farhat, who allegedly sheltered Maulana Tauqeer Raza during the violence. Raza, the president of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council, has been accused of orchestrating the clashes and was arrested earlier. The administration has identified several illegal properties linked to Raza's associates for potential demolition.
In addition to the BDA's actions, the Municipal Corporation conducted an anti-encroachment drive in the Sailani area, removing unauthorized extensions of shops and houses. The Municipal Commissioner was present during these operations. Dr Manikandan emphasized that illegal constructions on government land would face strict action, stating, "Illegal constructions on government and ceiling land will not be spared. Strict action will be taken as per rules."
Authorities are continuing to monitor the network of associates connected to Tauqeer Raza, suspected of funding illegal activities under the guise of community programs. The administration's efforts aim to restore order and ensure compliance with building regulations in the district.
