Chennai: The ongoing constitutional tussle between the Tamil Nadu government and Governor R.N. Ravi has escalated to the Supreme Court, with the state filing a petition on October 4, 2025, challenging the Governor’s decision to refer the Kumbakonam Kalaignar University Bill to the President of India. The government’s legal move contends that the Governor’s action undermines the will of the state legislature and represents an overreach of his constitutional authority.
The petition, which is expected to be heard soon, seeks the Supreme Court’s intervention to issue appropriate orders and resolve the impasse. The bill, which was passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, aims to establish a new university named after former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi (popularly known as ‘Kalaignar’)
