**Tragic Police Chase Ends in Fatal M62 Collision**

The M62 has been closed following a fatal incident involving a police chase that resulted in the death of a man in his 30s. The collision occurred at approximately 12.52am when a black Mercedes C220 failed to stop for West Yorkshire Police on the eastbound motorway.

As the vehicle attempted to take an exit slip road at junction 29, it crashed into a barrier. The man, who was the sole occupant of the car, died at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and will receive specialist family liaison support.

In light of the incident, the M62 eastbound remains closed between Tingley and Lofthouse, with diversions in place. Police have warned that the road will be closed "for some time yet" and are urging motorists to seek alternative routes.

Chiara Fiorillo, an Independent Officer for Police Conduct, confirmed that a mandatory referral has been made regarding the incident, which will be investigated independently.

West Yorkshire Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward. They stated, "If anyone witnessed this collision or the events leading up to it, they are urged to contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team via 101, quoting log 52 of 4 October."

Emergency services, including police and ambulance teams, are currently at the scene, managing the situation and ensuring public safety. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the chase and subsequent collision is ongoing.
