One of college football's most storied and compelling rivalries added a new chapter this weekend.
And with it, Miami further established itself as a bona fide national championship contender.

Carson Beck and Malachi Toney connected on a pair of touchdowns and the Hurricanes’ defense largely neutralized the nation’s No. 1 scoring offense in a 28-22 victory against No. 19 Florida State on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida.
Beck threw for 241 yards and four touchdowns. Toney, No. 3 Miami’s freshman wide receiver superstar, was his favorite target much of the night, bringing in seven catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Toney’s brilliance was one of the few things that could outshine fellow wideout CJ Daniels, who added 78 receiving yards and two touchdowns for the Hurricanes.
After giving up a field goal on the opening possession, Miami held Florida State scoreless on seven consecutive drives. Trailing 28-3 early in the fourth quarter, the Seminoles got a pair of late touchdown passes from Tommy Castellanos, but the hole they’d spent much of the night digging was simply too deep. After a 35-yard field goal from Jake Weinberg got Florida State within six with 20 seconds left, the Seminoles were unable to recover the ensuing onside kick, sealing the victory for coach Mario Cristobal’s team.
Castellanos threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns and added a team-high 57 rushing yards, but also threw two costly interceptions, both of which were brought in inside the Hurricanes’ 20-yard line.

Miami vs Florida State updates, highlights
FINAL: Miami 28, Florida State 22
A bit of a deceiving final score, but Miami hangs on for a 28-22 victory on the road against Florida State. The Hurricanes improve to 5-0 while the Seminoles drop their second game in eight days to fall to 3-2.
Florida State drills FG, gets within six
There are only 20 seconds remaining, but we have a one-score game. After turning Miami over on downs, Florida State has a frenetic 60-yard drive up the field, with coach Mike Norvell opting for a 35-yard Jake Weinberg field goal with 20 seconds left to get the Seminoles within six, 28-22.
The Hurricanes recover the ensuing onside kick, though, and with Florida State out of timeouts, that'll do it.
Tommy Castellanos throws second TD pass
It's almost certainly too late for Florida State, but the Seminoles are mounting a bit of a late run.
After forcing a Miami punt, Florida State goes up the field with a marathon 19-play, 96-yard drive that eats 5:10 off the clock. It's punctuated by a 6-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Castellanos to Randy Pittman Jr. that cuts the Hurricanes' lead to 28-19 after a successful 2-point conversion.
The Seminoles are unable to recover the ensuing onside kick, giving Miami the ball at the Florida State 39-yard line with 3:19 left. Coach Mike Norvell has all three timeouts, as well as the 2-minute timeout.
Florida State breaks scoring drought with TD
Tommy Castellanos finishes off a 10-play, 47-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Lawayne McCoy. The touchdown gives Florida State its first points since getting a field goal on its opening possession, breaking a drought of seven consecutive drives with no points.
With a 2-point conversion, Florida State cuts Miami's lead is 28-11 with 10:04 remaining.
Dylan Day called for targeting
A rare misstep by Miami sees Dylan Day ejected for targeting against FSU's Squirrel White on a punt return attempt. That gives the Seminoles the ball at the Miami 47 and keeps Day from the first half of FSU's next game.
Third quarter: Miami 28, Florida State 3
Carson Beck throws fourth TD pass for Miami
We've officially got a blowout. Following Tommy Castellanos' interception, the Hurricanes march up the field, going 80 yards in eight plays. The drive is capped off by a 24-yard touchdown pass from Carson Beck to CJ Daniels, the second time they've hooked up for a score tonight.
Miami's lead is up to 28-3 with 3:53 left in the third quarter.
Tommy Castellanos throws second interception
On a first-and-10 from the Miami 37-yard line, Florida State quarterback Tommy Castellanos throws an ill-advised pass deep into double coverage, which is picked off by Hurricanes defensive back Jakobe Thomas in the end zone for a touchback.
Miami will take over at its own 20.
Malachi Toney TD gives Miami commanding lead
If Florida State had hopes the second half was going to go much differently than the first, Miami tried to put an end to it quickly.
On their opening drive of the second half, and facing a fourth-and-2 from the Florida State 40-yard line, Carson Beck finds Malachi Toney at the 34 for a first down and the Miami superstar freshman takes it the rest of the way, outrunning the Seminoles secondary and into the end zone.
The Hurricanes' lead is up to 21-3 with 9:09 remaining in the third quarter.

Miami TD called back by penalty
For a moment, it looked like Carson Beck and Malachi Toney had connected on another touchdown, with Toney taking a dump-off 47 yards after the catch to the end zone, but it's called back due an illegal motion penalty on Miami.
The Hurricanes are ultimately forced to punt, with Florida State taking over at its own 10-yard line with 3:06 remaining in the half.
Miami recovers Florida State fumble
Just when it seems like Florida State catches a good break, the Seminoles cough it up. A 29-yard Miami punt gave Florida State the ball at midfield, but on the first play of the drive, Ousmane Kromah fumbles, with Keionte Scott falling on the ball at the Hurricanes' 44-yard line.
Florida State punts again
The Seminoles get down to the Miami 44-yard line, but facing a fourth-and-17, coach Mike Norvell opts to punt, with the Hurricanes set to take over at their own 14. After getting a field goal on its opening drive, Florida State has come away empty-handed on its past three possessions.
Carson Beck tosses second TD pass to extend Miami lead

Carson Beck TD pass puts Miami on top

Beck and Daniels had connected earlier on the longest play of the possession, a 47-yard pass on a beautiful deep ball from Beck and Daniels was able to bring in.

The Seminoles aren't able to come away with points on their second drive, failing to get past their own 36-yard line and punting. Miami will take over at its own 21.

What has been a decorated Miami offense under Carson Beck punts on its first drive after Beck throws it away on a third-and-8 and gets whistled for intentional grounding. Florida State will take over at its own 20-yard line.
Florida State gets FG on opening drive
The Seminoles' first possession of the day ends with some points. Florida State goes 70 yards across 11 plays, with Jake Weinberg connecting on a 23-yard field goal to get his team an early lead over rival Miami. Miami vs Florida State predictions
Liam Rooney, Tallahassee Democrat: Miami 31, FSU 28:
"The Seminoles enter the game highly motivated after the loss to Virginia, and this week will be a much better version of the FSU team in comparison to the double overtime loss. This one will be close, almost a coin flip on who wins, and it comes down to which team wins in the trenches, and the advantage, currently, leans to Miami."
Dan Rorabaugh, Palm Beach Post: Miami 27, FSU 17
