The script seemed to be working for Alabama football during its first drive of Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt . The Crimson Tide had already taken seven plays and gone 46 yards.

Then, the Tide came up short on a third down, and Kalen DeBoer, as he often does, opted to forgo the chance for a long field goal and went for it on fourth down. Unfortunately for DeBoer and company, disaster struck.

Quarterback Ty Simpson dropped back and threw downfield to his left. Wherever he was hoping the ball would wind up, he didn’t execute.

Simpson’s throw went straight to Vanderbilt defensive back Martel Hight. He picked it off, making for Alabama’s first turnover of the season, Simpson’s first interception.
