George Jones had to be smiling from up above because in an effort for the ages, the Brantford Harlequins captured the McCormick Cup on Saturday at the rugby complex that bears his name.

Hosting Waterloo County on the George Jones Fields at the Harlequins Grounds, Brantford stormed back from an eight-point second-half deficit to score a 40-34 win in the provincial senior men’s championship game.

It was the first McCormick Cup provincial men’s rugby championship to be played away from longtime host Fletcher’s Fields in Markham after that complex was sold.

Jones, who passed away more than a decade ago, is credited with bringing rugby to Brantford in the 1950s. He also bought and donated the land the fields sit on.
