An Air India Boeing Dreamliner travelling from Amritsar to Birmingham has been taken out of service after its emergency turbine activated during descent into BHX on Saturday.

The Ram Air Turbine (RAT) system is a fan-like mechanism which automatically activates when aircraft experience power loss, utilising incoming airflow to generate emergency power.

"The landing was safe in Birmingham ," Air India was quoted as saying in Indian media. THey added: "All electrical and hydraulic components were found to be working normally."

The aircraft was the identical model to the one involved in the devastating Ahmedabad plane crash in June, which claimed the lives of all crew members and all but one of its 230 passengers shortly after the RAT system was similarly activated.
