Joe Daniels was explaining different types of animal scat and how to tell them apart, using mocked-up models in glass containers.

"Animal poop, if you will," a cheerful Daniels, a public outreach and education officer, detailed for a visitor to the Parks Canada booth at Derek Doubleday Arboretum, beginning with the biggest example.

"This is a model of bear scat, what you'll typically see this time of year, especially with all the salmon in the Fraser River this time of year."

A smaller example was cougar scat and the smallest was coyote scat.

"Coyote scat looks a lot like dog scat," Daniels observed. "Just has a lot of hair and bone in it. Cougar scat's usually hidden. Think your cat in a litter box."
