GLOVERSVILLE — One of the best things about birdwatching is that you can do it anywhere and with anyone. My favorite thing about the activity is that it has brought me to places and to people I wouldn’t have expected. Last month, the city I was born in called me home to bird.

The Department of Environmental Conservation christened three new New York State Birding Trails in Fulton County this summer, all along the FJ&G Rail Trail — one in Johnstown, one in Gloversville and one in Vail Mills. The trails, which have been walked for decades, now receive a new designation to join a of accessible bird hotspots.
