A man’s body was recovered after a silo farm rescue Saturday afternoon in Lancaster County, officials said.

Emergency crews were dispatched around 12:30 p.m. to a farm at the 100 block of Geist Road in Upper Leacock Township, according to the Lancaster County coroner’s office. Upper Leacock Fire Company said the victim, who was found inside the silo, was a man.

Upper Leacock Fire Chief Larry Miller told WGAL the man died after inhaling “silo gas.”

Silo gas forms naturally during the fermentation of freshly added feed, releasing carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides that can accumulate inside the silo.

Emergency crews used breathing apparatuses while recovering the man’s body, Miller said.

The man’s name, age and address have not been publicly released.
