Stevie Nicol has hailed the Ayr United Academy for clocking up its 20th anniversary. ‌

United’s greatest ever homegrown player, who was sold to Liverpool for £300,000 in 1981, sent a glowing video tribute to the Academy’s celebratory brunch at Somerset Park on Sunday. ‌

And he saluted the work done in the community and developing young players as “fantastic”. ‌

Nicol, 63, now a football commentator in America after being a leading manager and coach, told the gathering: “Thought I would send a message of congratulations to everyone involved in the Ayr United Academy, 20 years is fantastic.

“Obviously in my day it was the Boys’ Club but it’s good to see the club is progressing, having their own academy and still producing players.
