FRANKFURT, Ky (WSAZ) - When firefighters respond to calls, they are making a difference in the community and leaving a legacy to remember.
When the crew at Hitchens Volunteer Fire Department in Carter County, Kentucky, heard their captain’s last call, they never expected it so soon.
“The night before, she was working there,” Chief Gregory Shaffer said. “That morning, we had stopped for a roadblock. We like to have fun.”
Shaffer said his wife and Captain Donita Shaffer were brave, strong, kind and had a heart of gold for not just her loved ones but for the community.
“She worked at daycare,” Shaffer said. “She worked at Northeast Head Start to take care of kids. She was just a roundabout person. She always cared about someone or did something extra.”
