SEATTLE — Millions of birds continue to silently fly overhead, making their long seasonal journey south. The autumn bird migration season is in full swing, peaking between September 19 and October 11 in western Washington, according to researchers at Purdue University's AeroEco Lab.

On the nights of October 3 and October 4, more than 16 million birds flew across Washington state , according to real-time tracking data from BirdCast . Around 4.4 million of those passed through King County alone.

And it's not over yet!

Birds primarily migrate at night, using the stars to navigate. Artificial lights — from city skylines to backyard floodlights — can confuse and disorient them. Scientists say this confusion can lead to exhaustion, collisions with buildings, and even death.
