Locals in Victoria's high country are warning visitors about the unpredictable and potentially deadly conditions in the alpine region, after the bodies of two women were discovered near Falls Creek.

The women, believed to be in their 20s or 30s, were found by hikers on Friday afternoon near Cleve Cole Hut at Nelse, north-east of Falls Creek.

Victoria Police said they had still not been formally identified.

Mount Bogong Club president Keith Jackson said the region's weather could change rapidly, even in warmer months.

"We've all been up there in January, February, and there's been a foot of snow," he said.

" And if you're not prepared, if you don't have gloves, a hat, waterproof gear and proper boots, you're going to be in trouble. "
