Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said he has been forced to make changes to his public engagements after a man was charged with threatening to kill him.
Mr Albanese said the “level of threats” has “elevated substantially” in recent times, and he has been forced to change what he could and could not do in public.
“We need to take these issues seriously, and I thank the Australian Federal Police and the authorities for the work that they have done,” Mr Albanese told reporters on Monday.
“This matter is before the courts now and the gentleman has been remanded and will appear before the court on Wednesday, so I won't go into any specifics.
“We have seen in other countries—the United States, in the United Kingdom—we have seen public figures … targeted.”
