Xavier Worthy made his return to the Kansas City Chiefs lineup in Week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens. Will it be short-lived?
Worthy is "questionable" for the Chiefs' Week 5 "Monday Night Football" game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He received a status downgrade just over 24 hours before the game, sending NFL fans and fantasy football managers alike into a tizzy, wondering whether he would play.
Will Worthy see the field as the Chiefs look to extend their winning streak to three games? Here's what to know about the second-year speedster's status for "Monday Night Football" and how the Chiefs might replace him if he can't play.
Is Xavier Worthy playing today?
It isn't yet clear whether Worthy will suit up for the Chiefs on "Monday Night Football."
Kansas City announced Worthy was downgraded to "questionable" Sunday after previously carrying no injury designation from the contest. He was listed as a full participant in practice at each of the Chiefs' three sessions from Wednesday to Friday despite dealing with shoulder and ankle injuries.
NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe reports Worthy was deemed questionable "as a precaution" after his injured ankle was "a little swollen" after disembarking the Chiefs' plane Sunday. The team will further assess his status Monday.
The ankle appears to be the larger issue for Worthy at present than his shoulder problem. The 22-year-old suffered a shoulder dislocation on the Chiefs' first offensive play of the season after colliding with Travis Kelce while running a route.
Worthy missed the rest of the team's season opener and was inactive in Weeks 2 and 3 while dealing with the injury. He returned to action in Week 4 against the Ravens, recording five catches for 83 yards in a 37-20 Chiefs win.
Chiefs WR depth chart
The Chiefs have seven receivers on their 53-man roster, but Worthy is clearly the team's No. 1 option at present. Below is a look at the pecking order within their receiver room:
- Xavier Worthy
- JuJu Smith-Schuster
- Hollywood Brown
- Tyquan Thornton
- Jalen Royals
- Jason Brownlee
- Nikko Remigio
If Worthy can't play Monday, Brown would see an increase in playing time. He saw action on just 38 snaps (52.1% of the team's offensive total) against the Ravens, as Worthy and Smith-Schuster led the team's receiving corps.
Thornton would also figure to see an increase in playing time if Worthy is out. The former New England Patriot played just 25 snaps after Worthy's return in Week 4 – good for 34.2% of Kansas City's offensive total – against the Ravens.
Both Brown and Thornton possess the speed necessary to help replace Worthy, who is known for his speed.
When will Rashee Rice return?
For those wondering where Rice is, he is set to miss Kansas City's first six games after being suspended for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. As such, the third-year receiver won't be eligible to return to action until Week 7 when the Chiefs host the Las Vegas Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium.
