Playwright Larissa FastHorse has been on a tear in recent years, her career turbocharged by the success of her dark comedy “The Thanksgiving Play” that, in 2023, made her the first known Native female playwright to ever be produced on Broadway.

Now she’s stepping into the spotlight — well, back into the spotlight — with her autobiographical solo show “Fancy Dancer,” a world premiere co-produced by Seattle Rep and Seattle Children’s Theatre and presented at Seattle Rep.

FastHorse, who won a 2020 MacArthur Fellowship (aka the “genius grant”), pivoted to writing after a career as a professional ballet dancer. Her fraught, ferocious journey to that career is the story of “Fancy Dancer,” and she performs the autobiographical piece herself, alternating shows with Burgandi Trejo Phoenix.
