BETHALTO, Ill. – The Illinois State Treasurer holds approximately $2.5 billion in unclaimed funds and property belonging to Illinoisians. The treasurer’s office and State Rep. Amy Elik, R-Alton, are hosting a public event Monday to give residents a chance to see if the state owes them money.
The state treasurer acts as the custodian of all unclaimed property, which includes overlooked bank accounts, insurance policy proceeds, unpaid rebate cards, and the contents of safe deposit boxes. Those items or property is turned over to the state’s ICASH program.
After five years of failed attempts to locate the owner, items and property are surrendered to the treasurer’s office.
