VEAZIE, Maine (WABI) - One Maine woman is striving to set a new record by growing the largest zucchini in the U.S.

For Sarah Whitty, gardening is a hobby she has been doing it since she moved into her home 13 years ago.

“The old owners had put a jack-o-lantern into their compost pile, and a random pumpkin just grew all over my yard, and that inspired me to try growing giant pumpkins, and I’ve been growing giant pumpkins since then. About three years ago I decided to expand to other giant vegetables,” Whittey said.

Growing giant produce has become somewhat of a staple of hers.

“My biggest pumpkin is almost 1,600 pounds. I grow some long-gourds, which are just really long gourds. I grew one this year that was almost 11 and half feet and it took first place at Deerfield Fair in New Hampsh
