He pitched 218 innings back in the days they didn’t baby pitchers and he struck out 276 batters.
No kid pitcher was ever better than Gooden. But what we witnessed Sunday afternoon, in a different time and really in a changing sport, was as unforgettable as anything Gooden managed in 1984.
But Gooden made 99 starts for the Mets before his first playoff appearance in 1986. Yesavage had all of three starts, each of them limited in length and pitch count.
