A new doll is making its way to the Barbie lineup, but not all fans are pleased with its physique.

On Monday, Oct. 6, Mattel announced the launch of a brand new Barbie doll modeled after U.S. Olympic rugby medalist Ilona Maher. The 29-year-old rugby star, social media personality and body positivity advocate, took home a bronze medal with the U.S. rugby team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

"Being part of Team Barbie is about showing girls that confidence isn’t something to shy away from, but something to own," Maher said in a Mattel news release. "I’m honored to use my platform to empower the next generation to find that spark of confidence within themselves and let it drive them toward unlocking their limitless possibilities."

Mattel created an entirely new body sculpt for Maher's doll, which the brand says "celebrates strength with a straighter, more athletic torso, visibly defined arms, shoulders, and legs, plus sculpted core and back muscles."

But fans, of both Barbie and Maher, were quick to nitpick its appearance, with most disappointed by the lack of the doll's muscular display.

"We love to see it, but would have also loved the dolls to fully reflect the actual body build of each athlete," one Instagram user commented.

"Sad to see those fabulously varied female bodies shrunk to Barbie standards," another commented. "Where are the muscles?!"

Rugby fans ask for addition of Canadian players

In addition to Maher's doll, Mattel also created three one-of-a-kind dolls for other female rugby stars, including Ellie Kildunne of the United Kingdom, Portia Woodman-Wickliffe of New Zealand and Nassira Konde of France. These three dolls are not for sale though.

Other Barbie and rugby fans were disappointed to see the omission of Canada's Olivia Apps, who helped her country bring in the silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

"I’m obsessed!!!!!" one Instagram user wrote. "But seems like you missed a pretty important team. Give us a doll for Canada! You have so many incredible players to choose from."
