The BC SPCA says it has no authority to intervene after an ostrich died at the Universal Ostrich Farm near Edgewood, which remains under federal oversight by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

The CFIA confirmed the ostrich had a pre-existing condition, including a leg injury that affected its mobility. The agency stated the animal’s death occurred during a federally ordered cull linked to disease management measures.

Farm spokesperson Katie Pasitney shared a video on social media Saturday, accusing the CFIA of animal cruelty and claiming the ostrich’s death was preventable. The farm, home to more than 300 birds, has drawn international attention since the cull began earlier this summer, sparking protests and online outrage from animal-rights activists.
