A bear that authorities believe to be responsible for the recent death of a 60-year-old Missouri man who’d been camping in Newton County has been killed.
The victim of that attack has been identified as Max Thomas of Springfield, Missouri.
The pursuit of the animal suspected of attacking Thomas began on Sunday, when a bear was caught on camera in Sam’s Throne Recreation Area in the Ozark National Forest, close to where Thomas had been camping, according to a press release from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office. After comparing the new images to pictures of a bear taken by the victim before his death, the teams at the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and Newton County Sheriff’s Office “determined the bear appeared to be the same bear.”
