PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) -- Plans for a new elementary school within the Dunlap School District could come before the Peoria City Council within the next month.
If approved by the council on Oct. 28, a new building could house up to 740 elementary school students to help the Northern Peoria County school district handle its anticipated growth, said Dunlap Superintendent Scott Dearman.
"We’re extremely crowded," he said, noting Hickory Grove Elementary School has about 850 students in a building that was designed for 640. "And we have four others (elementary schools). They're all at capacity."
Last week, the city's Planning & Zoning Commission approved a proposal by the district to build a new 80,020 square-foot school that would be within a block of the existing Wilder-Waite Grade School.
