BOSTON — Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow would not commit to Triston Casas being the Red Sox ’ starting first baseman in 2026.

Casas suffered a season-ending patellar tendon injury May 2 that required surgery .

“I don’t think it makes a ton of sense on Oct. 6th to say someone is or isn’t our first baseman and we’ll see how things play out,” Breslow said Monday at Fenway Park. “Unfortunately, Triston has missed a significant amount of time over the last two years. We’ve also seen what he’s capable of doing when he’s healthy.”

The 25-year-old Casas struggled in 29 games during 2025 before his injury, going 18-for-99 (.182).

He missed 98 games in 2024, spending from April 21-Aug. 16 on the injured list due to torn cartilage in the rib cage on his right side .
