OMAHA, Neb. —

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said an officer was shot in the head by a round, but is alert and talking.

Schmaderer said two officers responded to a 911 call after employees reported a man acting erratically and making incoherent statements at the QuikTrip near 120th and Dodge.

When the officers arrived, they found the man outside the business and they had a conversation with him, which turned into gunfire, Schmaderer said.

One officer, a 15-year veteran of the force, was struck in the head by a round, but continued the gunfight, according to Schmaderer. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where Schmaderer and Omaha Mayor John Ewing Jr. were able to visit with him and his family.
