GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Grand Island Police took extra security precautions Saturday during the Harvest of Harmony parade.

In what may be a sign of the times, a video submitted to Local4 showed a police sniper on top of the Railroad Town building overlooking the parade route on Third Street.

GIPD Division Chief Jim Duering said this is the first time they’ve stationed a sniper to protect visitors and participants in the parade. He said they also use drones to check nearby rooftops, but Saturday’s windy conditions prevented them from flying.

Duering said there were other unspecified security precautions taken in an effort to prevent a mass shooting incident like those which have happened elsewhere in the country.
