WASHINGTON — As the government shutdown drags on, about 750,000 federal workers are furloughed and hundreds of thousands more are still working without pay. But members of Congress are still getting their checks. At $479 per day for most lawmakers, they have earned roughly $2,876 since the shutdown began. However, several lawmakers from North Carolina are choosing not to take that money.
I reached out to every member of Congress from North Carolina. So far, spokespeople for Representatives Virginia Foxx, Tim Moore, Valerie Foushee, and Chuck Edwards confirm they have all requested to have their pay withheld during the shutdown.
